The Arcade Fundamental Middle School oak planting project at Haggin Oaks Golf Course is the result of Ms. Thacker attending the Forestry Institute for Teachers (FIT). FIT encourages participants to develop and implement a natural resources oriented service learning project at their site.
Ms. Thacker reached out to UC Cooperative Extension Natural Resources Advisor Mike De Lasaux for project ideas. Mike suggested a valley oak planting project and was willing to help the effort.
Since 2015 Arcade students have participated in acorn collection, acorn viability testing, acorn propagation, planting and monitoring at Haggin Oaks Golf Course. They also observed and monitored root growth using a root growth observation box. The students were involved in fund raising and presentations to other students.
